Conversation and Bahavior Games in the Pragmatics of Dialogue

چکیده
In this article we present the bases for a computational theory of the cognitive processes underlying human communication. The core of the article is devoted to the analysis of the phases in which the process of comprehension of a communicative act can be logically divided: (1) literal meaning, where the reconstruction of the mental states literally expressed by the actor takes place: (2) speaker’s meaning. where the partner reconstructs the communicative intentions of the actor: (3) communicative effect, where the partner possibly modifies his own beliefs and intentions; (4) reaction, where the intentions for the generation of the response are produced: and (5) response, where an overt response is constructed. The model appeors to be compatible with relevant facts about human behavior. Our hypothesis is that, through communication, on actor tries to exploit the motivational structures of a partner so that the desired goal is generated. A second point is that social behavior requires that cooperation be maintained at some level. In the case of communication, cooperation is, in general, pursued even when the partner does not adhere to the actor’s goals, and therefore no cooperation occurs at the behavioral level. This important distinction is reflected in the two kinds of gome we introduce to account for communication. The main concept implied in communication is that two agents overtly reach a situation of shared mental states. Our model deols with shoredness through two primitives: shored beliefs and communicative intentions.

An Investigation of the Effectiveness of Dialogue Shadowing Technique (DST) on Iranian Intermediate EFL Learners’ Conversation Ability
The aim of the current study was to investigate whether L2 dialogue shadowing practice would have an effect on Iranian intermediate EFL learners’ conversation ability. For this purpose, 30 Iranian intermediate EFL learners at Padideh language center participated in the experiment of the study. The participants were divided into two groups of 15 who were assigned to the experimental and co...
متن کاملMulti-Party Quantum Dialogue with the Capability to Expand the Number of Users at Runtime
Quantum dialogue is a type of quantum communication in which users can simultaneously send messages to each other. The earliest instances of quantum dialogue protocols faced security problems such as information leakage and were vulnerable to intercept and resend attacks. Therefore, several protocols have been presented that try to solve these defects. Despite these improvements, the quantum di...
متن کاملSignificant Attributes of Conversation Analysis in Social Interviews
This paper aimed at manifesting the role of significant attributes of conversation analysis in social interviews from a functional perspective. In this paper the concern would be on how these attributes of conversation analysis acted as important elements in analyzing the interviews. In particular, the author discussed some samples of B.B.C learning English interviews which considered some conv...
متن کاملA Computational Model for Conversation Policies for Agent Communication
In this paper we propose a formal specification of a persuasion protocol between autonomous agents using an approach based on social commitments and arguments. In order to be flexible, this protocol is defined as a combination of a set of conversation policies. These policies are formalized as a set of dialogue games. The protocol is specified using two types of dialogue games: entry dialogue g...
متن کاملComputational Approaches to the Pragmatics Problem
Unlike many aspects of human language, pragmatics involves a systematic many-to-many mapping between form and meaning. This renders the computational problems of encoding and decoding meaning especially challenging, both for humans in normal conversation and for artificial dialogue systems that need to understand their users’ input. A particularly striking example of this difficulty is the reco...
